May is National Bicycle Safety Month, a reminder for riders of all ages and experience levels to stay safe every time they hit the road, trail, or bike path. Whether you ride for fitness, commuting, recreation, or adventure, safety should always come first.
Follow the Basics
Every ride matters, and a few simple habits can make all the difference:
- Wear a helmet
- Be visible to drivers and pedestrians
- Follow traffic laws and signals
- Stay focused and avoid distractions
- Check your bike before every ride
- Respect others sharing the road and trails
Taking a few extra minutes to prepare can help prevent accidents and keep every ride enjoyable.

Safety Tips from the 99 ABW Safety Office
The 99 ABW Safety Office is helping riders stay informed throughout National Bicycle Safety Month with important safety briefs and educational resources.
T-CLOCS Bike Safety Checks
Before every ride, take a few minutes to inspect your bike using the T-CLOCS method: Tires and wheels, Controls, Lights and electronics, Oil and fluids, Chassis, and Stands. A quick inspection can help identify small issues before they become major safety hazards on the road.

The Vegas Heat Factor
Riding in Southern Nevada heat can be dangerous if you are not prepared. High temperatures increase the risk of dehydration, fatigue, and heat-related illness. Stay hydrated, wear proper protective gear, take breaks when needed, and avoid riding during the hottest parts of the day when possible.

Situational Awareness and Road Strategy
Staying alert and aware of your surroundings is one of the most important parts of safe riding. Always scan the road ahead, anticipate driver behavior, maintain safe following distances, and position yourself where you are most visible to others on the road.

Ride Sober, Arrive Alive
Never ride under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Impaired riding slows reaction time, affects judgment, and greatly increases the risk of serious accidents. Make responsible choices before getting on your bike so you and everyone around you can arrive safely.

Motorcycle Safety Training for Air & Space Force Personnel
All Air & Space Force personnel who ride motorcycles are encouraged to complete required motorcycle safety training courses and stay current on riding requirements. These courses are designed to improve rider awareness, strengthen defensive riding techniques, and help prevent accidents both on and off duty.

(Please note: Not a 99 Force Support Squadron program)
Completing training not only supports mission readiness, but also helps riders build confidence and develop safe riding habits for every journey.
Ride Safe All Month Long
National Bicycle Safety Month is the perfect opportunity to refresh your riding habits and encourage others to do the same. By practicing smart riding techniques and staying aware of your surroundings, everyone can help create safer roads and trails for the entire community.
Ride smart. Ride safe. Every ride. Every time.
